Where the Mare meets the Oak

The name comes from a founding myth: creation begins when the chaotic energy of a seafoam mare meets the roots of an oak.

The Oak is what we're rooted in: values that don't move with the size of the moment. The Mare is where those values meet the world: real operations, real people, and a technology moving faster than anyone can plan for.

See it. Say it. Fix it.

Everything we value comes back to one motion: notice what's actually happening, tell the truth about it, and do something about it. Each step has a side that faces the world and a root that holds it steady.

Go where the work is

We learn the work from the people doing it, at the dispatch board, in the CAPA queue, at the parts desk, before we decide what should change.

Oak

No need too small

Nobody here is too important to help with the little things. We earn our place on every engagement, with every client, and with each other.

Say

Mare

Say what you see, kindly

If the real problem sits upstream of what you asked for, you'll hear it from us early, and as kindly as it can be said. Then we'll help with whichever one you choose to fix first.

Oak

Fix the problem, not the person

When something goes wrong, we look for the gap in process, training, or tooling that produced it. Everyone was doing their best with what they had.

Fix

Mare

Stand behind it

We measure whether the work landed, and when it didn't, you hear that from us too, along with what we'd change.

Oak

Size it to the problem

We build what the problem has earned and no more: small enough to prove out, solid enough to grow from.

Portrait of Chris Fairfax, Founder and Principal of Mare & Oak

Led by Chris Fairfax

Founder & Principal

Mare & Oak is built on a decade of shipping the software businesses actually run on. Before founding the firm, Chris led a product portfolio spanning workflow, contact-center productivity, and AI, helped steer a quarter-billion-dollar pipeline, and shipped platforms now in use on five continents.

He came up through the work rather than around it: support, training, engineering, architecture, and product leadership. That range is why he can sit with the people who build a system and the people who answer for it, and keep both in the same conversation.

Chris leads every Mare & Oak engagement directly, from the first scope to the last measurement.

Principal-led, with the right people brought in

Mare & Oak is built to stay sharp rather than to look big.

  • Principal-led delivery

Focused engagements are delivered by Chris directly. Larger builds are led by him, with specialists brought in for the parts that need them.

  • Specialists chosen per engagement

When a project needs depth we don't keep on permanent staff, we bring in senior contractors from a vetted network: the people we'd want in the room for that work, not whoever happened to be on the bench.

  • An Advisory Board

Seasoned operators and builders from outside the firm, who pressure-test our thinking and keep our standards high as we grow.

Tell us what you're seeing. We'll help you build the fix.
